What skip size do I need?
We are proud to offer skips from 4 yards to 40 yards. Our skips are suitable for a wide range of projects as they come in such a variety of sizes. Whatever size your project is, we’re bound to have a skip suitable. We have skips available for small, domestic projects and skips available for bigger, commercial projects too.
4-yard skips can fit 30/40 bin bags in them, which is still a reasonable sized skip even for a domestic project. It is even big enough to fit a sofa inside.
12-yard skips can fit 100-120 bin bags so if you are revamping your entire home, this could be suitable. Otherwise, it’s perfect for commercial use.
40-yard skips are roll on/roll off (you may have heard the term RORO before) which we think is ideal for large, construction projects that require the maximum amount of waste.
We also offer skip sizes in between these, such as our 8-yard skips and 20-yard skips, if these should be suitable for your project.
What happens to skip waste?
Hiring a skip is a great way to dispose of your rubbish because at KSD, we dispose of your waste in the most environmentally friendly way possible. We comply with all government regulations and are proud to say that we recycle 96.7% of all the waste we collect. Our hardworking team always aims for zero waste to landfill.
Separate your waste
First, we separate your waste based on their material, then it is moved into our loading bays.
Treating
After this, we treat your waste. Depending on what’s appropriate, this involves shredding, screening or compacting. It is then moved into our large containers.
Processing
The way we process your waste depends on the type of material it is. Furniture made from chipboard or wood is often sent to manufacturers of chipboard to be reused. Green waste is sent to specialist facilities, and is then later made into compost.
Our zero waste to landfill policy shows our strong commitment to reducing the amount of waste being sent to landfills. We try to adhere to this policy with everything we do as disposing of waste at a landfill is not a sustainable long term solution.
When you choose KSD Environmental, you never have to worry about where your waste will end up.
How long can I hire a skip for?
At KSD Environmental, we are proud to provide flexible skip hire solutions but they need to be arranged in advance. The average time for people to hire a skip is no more than two weeks but we are able to accommodate based on your project and the current demand.
Where can I place a skip and do I need a permit?
Generally, skip permits are only required if you are placing your skip on a public road or land. You cannot place the skip somewhere that it could interfere with pedestrians. If you are placing your skip somewhere entirely private, you do not need a permit.
If you haven’t got space on your property, you may need to place it on a public road. In which case, you would need a permit.
At KSD Environmental, we are conveniently able to apply for a skip permit on your behalf. We will just add it to the total cost of your skip hire charge, making the process as easy as possible for you.

How do I load my skip safely?
When hiring a skip, it’s important to be aware of how to load it correctly for not only your safety but the safety of those around you. If you overload your skip it can be dangerous as you run the risk of items falling out of it and the potential of injuring others.
Being organised with your waste is the best place to start. Make sure to separate your waste into separate categories, such as the following:
- Flat items
- Items that stack, such as bricks
- Bulky or large items
- Loose debris
Aim to reduce your bulkier or larger items into smaller pieces where possible to make loading your skip easier.
Flat items should be first to go in as they make an easy base. This can include cardboard, and wood. Always flatten your cardboard boxes before putting them into the skip.
Next, pop in the items that stack together easily, such as bricks. Try to fill the skip’s base with these as it creates a second layer to put things on top of.
Once you’ve placed your flat items and stacked items into the skip, it’s time for the bigger and bulkier items. This can include wardrobes and heavier appliances. Try to break them down as small as possible to ideally create a convenient layer. Make use of all available space.
The final items to be loaded into your skip should be any loose debris.
