Whenever you hire a skip, it’s essential to think about where you’re going to place it. If you’ve got the room on your property, it’s not a problem, but if you need to put your skip on the public highway, you’ll have to get a skip hire permit. If you don’t have one, the council might remove your skip without notice, and you may even have to pay a fine.
Skip hire permits or skip licenses are required by law if you hire a skip and place it on a public road. Don’t stress about it being a complicated procedure because we will organize this for you.

What is a skip permit?
Skip permits are available from your local council and are a legal requirement if you need to place a skip on any public highway.
There is an excellent reason for such a requirement. They act as a control to limit the number of skips placed on the highway, how much space they take up, and ensure parking and traffic flow are not affected.
Why you might need one
Not everyone who hires a skip will need a skip permit. Whether you need one or not depends on where you plan to place your skip. If you’ve got the space to situate it on your property, for example, your garden or driveway, you won’t need to apply for a permit. This is because you’re not going to block the path or highway.
If you haven’t got the space on your property, the most obvious and convenient place to put a skip is on the highway or footpath outside your home, construction, or development site. In such a case, you usually have to get a permit from the local authorities.
How much will it cost?
The actual cost of a permit depends on where you live and how long you are going to require the permit. At KSD Environmental Services, we will add it to the overall hire charge, We would advise you of the cost at the time you place an enquiry or order.
Who can apply for a permit?
You can apply for a permit yourself, but most skip hire companies, including KSD Environmental, will apply for a license on your behalf.
How long will it take to get one?
This is something else that depends on where you live, but it usually takes no more than a few days for your local council to process your application. Take this timeframe into account when you hire your skip, together with when you need to get your waste ready.
How long will the permit last?
In general, a skip license lasts for a couple of weeks. However, this does depend on the council that issued the permit. If need be, you may be able to extend the period for an additional fee. Usual options to obtain a permit are 1, 7, 14 & 28 day permit durations, however this can vary between different local council’s. We will advise you at the time of enquiry.
